Elizabeth Brown Shook went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 28, 2021. Betsy, as she was known, was the oldest daughter of the late Carl Cleveland Brown and Elizabeth Moss Brown. Betsy's sister Alline Brown Vogtle survives her along with three of Betsy's four children, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, her cousin Sarah B. Neal and many special nieces and nephews.
An indomitable spirit, Betsy enjoyed meeting people, learning about them, and making friends with most everyone she had the privilege of knowing. She was a student of Birmingham's people and history, and often found ways of connecting with others through her various circles of friends and family. Raised in Birmingham, she first went to Ramsey School and then graduated from Shades Valley High School; she went on to attend Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. While attending Goucher she met the love of her life, Douglas Warner Shook and married on June 23,1954. They were married for 52 years before Doug passed away in 2006. Their marriage began in Birmingham, AL, taking them to Neenah, WI, then Hendersonville, NC and back to Birmingham, AL where they raised their four children. Betsy's love of dancing lasted her entire life and she passionately taught her skills to young dancers, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Betsy was an active member of the Birmingham community. She was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed leading neighborhood bible studies. She enjoyed playing tennis and golf as a member of Mountain Brook Club. Additionally, she was a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, the Grapevine Garden Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Betsy and her husband Doug enjoyed their retired life in Perdido Key, FL and then Delray Beach, FL.
Betsy was predeceased by her husband, Douglas W. Shook and her daughter Margaret "Peggy" Shook Zeiger (Evan). She is survived by her two daughters Elizabeth "Lisa" Tiernan (Michael), Alline "Kelly" Morton (Steve, Jr) and her son Douglas W. Shook, Jr. (Ashley). She has fourteen grandchildren, John William "Bill" Tiernan (Jaclyn), Whitney T. Ranson (Alex), Margaret T. Hanbury (Christopher), Hillary Tiernan, Dr. H. Evan Zeiger III, Ashley Z. Peak (Christopher), Douglas Zeiger (Sarah), S. Porter Morton, III (Lindsay), Frances M. Shaw (Andrew), 2nd Lt. Timothy S. Morton, John Douglas Morton, Douglas W. Shook III, Brooke E. Shook and Hayden H. Shook. She was blessed to enjoy her eleven great-grandchildren.
