He was born in Butler, Alabama on December 12, 1944 to Fred C. and Thelma T. Crum and was reared in Silas, Alabama. Fred was a graduate of the University of Alabama where he received his BS in Chemistry and was also a member of ROTC. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. After serving his country he returned to The University of Alabama in Birmingham where he received his MBA. Fred started his banking career at BTNB on March 6, 1972 as a trainee and retired after 33 ½ years as Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer of SouthTrust Bank. He was a member of The Downtown Rotary Club and served on several Boards including PARCA, Birmingham Incubator, Marvin’s Building and Supply, Smyer Lake, and The Crossings at WaterSound Beach, FL. He was an avid Alabama football fan and enjoyed playing golf, fishing, family vacations and the beach.
Fred is survived by his wife Rebecca Crum, his son: Dr. James Crum (Shawna); his daughter: Emily Phillips (Bob); grandchildren: Walt, Maggie and Addie Kate Phillips and Owens Crum; and his mother: Thelma Crum.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 9th at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church from 10:00 a.m. until noon with the Memorial Service beginning at noon.
