Gary Lane Dean (65), passed away surrounded by his immediate family Saturday April 17, 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was the beloved husband to Tammi Dean and father to Eryn Dean, Lauren Hunt (Leigh) and Amber Johnson. He was born September 24, 1955 to Lawrence E. and Gloria Ann Dean in Portsmouth, VA. He and his brothers Larry Wayne and David Lawrence Dean grew up near Navy bases on the East and West coast. They loved camping/fishing, making forts, flying model planes and playing sports. When their father retired from the US Navy, they moved to Columbus, GA where Gary graduated from Kendrick High School in 1973. Shortly after High School, Gary joined the US Navy and served for 20 years retiring as a Chief. Gary served as the Commander for the Shades Valley American Legion, Post 134 for two years shortly after he retired from the Navy. He learned a great deal about computers in the Navy and he was an IT manager for Beverage distributers until his retirement. He and his twin brother Larry had places that were a few miles apart on Lake Logan Martin where they hoped to be able to spend more time together after retiring from their very busy jobs. Gary had a passion for fishing, grilling and smoking meat.
Gary is survived by his parents Lawrence E. (Bo) and Gloria Dean; Twin brother Larry Wayne and younger brother David Lawrence Dean; Wife Tammi, Daughters Eryn, Lauren and Amber; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
The Family appreciates all the kind words and prayers for Gary during the past year while he fought a grueling battle with Cancer. The pandemic made it impossible to allow us all be together, but the text messaging helped us all feel connected. A memorial service will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, Alabama on Thursday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation begins 12:00 noon.
