Born in Charlotte, North Carolina on July 21, 1945, Gary was the son of the late Peter Wrenn Delohery, Sr. and Ann Marie Donohue Delohery. He grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and was a graduate of Washington & Lee High School. After graduating high school, Gary enrolled at Virginia Tech and graduated with a B.S. degree in Political Science. He then entered Cumberland School of Law and earned his J.D. degree and served in private practice for 26 years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, JoAnne Robertson Delohery and by his very good friends who were just like family to him, Tammy and Joe Simonetti and their two sons, Joseph Simonetti (Sara Frances) and Jake Simonetti (Chrislyn) and their granddaughter, Eloise Ruth Simonetti.
