George Rudolph Jackson, age 100, passed away on February 13, 2026. George grew up in El Paso, Texas, and Washington, D.C. He lived in Birmingham since 1954 where he was a member of Shades Valley Presbyterian Church, and more recently Southminster Presbyterian Church.
He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, which explains his lifelong enthusiasm for fixing every mechanical thing he could find that appeared to need fixing.
George served in the US Army during both World War II and the Korean War. His recollections of his World War Il experiences are recorded in an interview by the World War II Museum in New Orleans. His reflections, and later, his paintings of the American military gravesites and memorials he saw in the Philippines in 1945 are vivid and moving.
George and his wife, Margie, raised two sons, Rick and Ken, and were the proud grandparents of a granddaughter, Erin, who called him Papa George. After Margie passed away, George married Beverly Burgess Jackson with whom he shared many happy years of love, travel, and dancing.
He took up water color painting over 50 years ago and created many beautiful paintings. As his skills improved through his own efforts and the guidance of gifted teachers, his style transitioned from representational to impressionistic, and occasionally, although accidently, to abstract. His work was regularly in demand by relatives and friends who had just bought a new house.
George's passion for family, church, painting, and Texas Aggie football sustained him, even though Aggie football often disappointed him.
George is preceded in death by his parents Rudy and Anna Jackson, his wife Margie Turlington Jackson, his brother Bill, his son Rick, and his granddaughter Erin. He is survived by his wife Beverly and his son Ken.
A memorial service will be held at Southminster Presbyterian Church on Friday February 20, 2026 at 2:00pm.
