Obituary of Harald F. Lassen Jr.
Harald Fougner Lassen Jr., devoted husband and father and accomplished businessman, died on March 17 after complications resulting from a tragic accident that occurred on March 2. He was 90. Harald was the youngest of three children of Harald Fougner Lassen and Ingrid Kruse-Jensen who were both from Norway, moved to the United States in the early 1920's, married in Charleston, SC and eventually settled in Birmingham. His brightest childhood memories were of his family's home in the Edgewood neighborhood within Homewood. He established many childhood friends in those days and most of them remained lifelong friends. Harald graduated from Ramsay High School in Birmingham in 1950 and then attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) and received a BS in Civil Engineering from API in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army on the GI Bill for two years between his Sophomore and Junior college years. Harald was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity while at Auburn. In the early 1960's he surveyed, planned, and assisted in the construction of Hollybrook Lake in the Dunnavant Valley region of Shelby County. Harald built the first cabin on the lake, and it remains today as a true family treasure. In 1966 he married Artist and Teacher Betty Henry Coston of Birmingham, and they lived in great happiness for over 40 years until her death in 2016. In the 1970's he worked for Thompson Tractor Company and was instrumental in the development of both Shoal Creek Club and Hugh Daniel Drive. Harald was later successful as an independent commercial contractor and as a local business owner. When he retired, he owned and operated Southern Well Supply Company in downtown Birmingham. Harald was a loving and devoted husband and a fantastic and supportive father to his three sons. He was also an outstanding and trustworthy friend to all who knew him. He was a long-time member of the Country Club of Birmingham where he enjoyed playing golf in the Two Bit, Gravy Train, and Killer Bee's dogfights, as well as reliving his rounds with friends in the 19th Hole. Harald was also a long-time member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club where he was a member of the Legends Planned Giving Society that benefits the Quarterbacking Children's Health Foundation. In 2021, he established the Betty Coston Lassen '54 Endowed Fund for Excellence in Education in The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University. In 2022, Harald was recognized as a member of the George Petrie Society at Auburn University for his planned giving to the University, including the establishment of an endowed scholarship within the College of Engineering. Harald was also a member of the following Donor Societies at Auburn University: 1856 Society, Ginn Society, James E. Foy Loyalty Society, and TenSeventyTwo at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts. Harald was predeceased by his parents, wife of 50 years Betty Coston Lassen, and sister Eugenia Lassen Northcutt. He is survived by his older sister Ingrid Lassen Kelley (Brian) of Charlottesville, Virginia, his sons Lee Rust Brown Jr (Lana) of Washington DC, David Coston Brown of the Territory of Guam, and Harald Fougner Lassen III (Wesley) of Birmingham, and his seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his beautiful and loving companion for the last seven years, Mollie Walker Cox of Birmingham. We will truly miss Harald, but his love, his infectious personality, and his uncanny sense of humor will remain in our hearts forever. Anyone fortunate enough to have known Harald will understand that both cigar and scotch whiskey sales in the Birmingham area will be in decline due to his passing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church, 1910 12th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205 or Harald F. Lassen, Jr. Endowed Scholarship in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, Auburn University Office of Gift Processing, 317 S. College Street, Auburn, Alabama 36849-5137 or Quarterbacking Children's Health Foundation, 2019 4th Avenue North, Suite 101, Birmingham, Alabama 35203. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, followed by a visitation in the Church Living Room at 3:00 p.m. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Lassen family.
