Harold E. Fletcher

Harold E. Fletcher died on May 13, 2014 at the age of 67. He was born the youngest of 4 children, in the sleepy farm town of Plant City, Florida on November 30, 1946 to Raleigh and Doris Fletcher. There he was taught how to play the piano, the value of a hard day's work, and a bit of old time religion, all of which stayed with him his entire life. In 1967, at the age of 20, he took a chance by moving to Atlanta to seek his fortune, and he found it in Stringfellow Lumber Company. He spent the next 38 years striving and accomplishing until he retired as President of the company in 2005. On the way, he met his lifelong friend and future father-in-law, Don Fisher, who would introduce him to his wife Donna. They were married on October 5, 1974 and remained married for 39 years. Together they had two children, Mary Kathryn: the eldest, the athlete and his heir in business. And Will: the younger, the engineer, his heir in music and home improvement. After retiring, he dedicated his remaining years to building a legacy for his wife and children in the form of the company he founded in their name, William & Mary Lumber Company, which Mary Kathryn now manages with the lessons she learned from working side by side with him. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham, the Newcomen Society, a softball coach and an ever-present spectator at all of his children's events. He is survived by his wife Donna, his daughter and son-in-law Mary Kathryn and Jonathan Glisson, son and daughter-in-law Will and Rose Fletcher and sisters Carolyn Gillman and Betty McBrayer. Gone, but not forgotten, we will never see his like again. Rest in peace, Daddy Bear. Visitation was held at Ridouts' Valley Chapel Funeral Home on Thursday, May 15th at 2:00 with Services to follow at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Kidney Foundation.
