Herman Bolden age 96 of Birmingham passed away on May 1, 2019. Born in rural Holmes County, Florida, son of Clifton and Eula P. Bolden. He is survived by his son, Stanley C. Bolden, granddaughter, Caroline B. McCormic as well as sisters Betty B. Joiner and JoAnn B. Roney. He is preceded in death by his wife Emmie and five brothers.
After finishing high school in 1940 he took secretarial training and in 1941 gained employment with a fledgling transit bus manufacturer located in Evergreen, Alabama. This led to a career of seventy-five plus years; two in Evergreen with the remainder in Birmingham.
In Evergreen he met his bride-to be Emmie Cardwell. They were married on June 27, 1945. Their union spanned seventy- one years and seven months, ending with her death on February 16, 2017. While Herman and Emmie rest in eternity, their love for the other lives on forever.
He was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. Club affiliations were The Club and Shoal Creek. His primary hobby was golf which he was privileged to play regularly for more than six decades.
Herman and Emmie were endowed with an altruistic spirit. More than two generations ago they began giving of their time and substance to causes in which they believed. They had special interest in diseases that are painful, debilitating and life threatening such as cancer and heart infirmities among others.
In 1990 The Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame recognized them with their Humanitarian Award and in 2008 The University of Alabama at Birmingham conferred upon Herman the degree of Doctor of Humanities.
