Ione was born to Ione Jackson and James Amzi Rudolph in Gainesville, Georgia on 6/15/1922. She studied at Brenau College and finished her BS degree in education at Ohio State University in 1943. After teaching in Gainesville schools, she joined the WAC in the Army Air Forces in 1944 and was discharged with the rank of sergeant after two years of service. She then continued teaching in Gainesville until marrying Henry Shine in 1950.
The couple moved to Birmingham in 1963 where they raised their three children. Ione had a loving heart, a strong sense of southern hospitality, and a servant spirit. She instilled a strong sense of respect and service to others by volunteering for many years at St. Martin's in the Pines where her mother spent her last years. She also volunteered her time and service at St. Francis Xavier Church for many years until that beloved community returned the favor by caring for her in later years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry (1991) and all of her siblings. Those left to hold her memory dear are children Robert (Bob) Henry Shine, Jr. of Fayetteville, TN, Mary Kay Potlock (Jay) of Lawrenceville, GA and Drs. James William Shine (Susanne) of Zionville, NC; grandchildren Kazia Roland, the Rev. Lara Shine Stroud (Daniel), Carolyn Potlock, the Rev. Anna Shine, Jonathan Shine, Kevin Potlock, and Fiona Shine; great grandchildren Payton Potlock and Charley Stroud and Henry Stroud (born 7/8/2018).
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Delmar Gardens, Lawrenceville and Mountain City Care and Rehab Center for the extraordinary and loving care they gave to our dear mother.
