He was originally known as Sonny Boy, then Jack, Dad and Poppee.
We have come to miss him in recent years, but we now mourn his passing. His peaceful departure was a comfort during an emotional time, though it is a minor salve on the hole that now rests poignantly in our lives.
We are so thankful for his insistent love, his unflagging support and for his perfect dependability in good times and bad. He brought a light to those around him through his unfiltered personality, the twinkle he often showed and warmth and kindness he always shared.
Jack was born in Selma, Alabama to John Oscar Hain, Jr. and Clay Ashby Doyle, and had an older sister, Shannon Larimore. He served in World War II as a sergeant in the United States Army Air Force, flyingh numerous missions as a B17 gunner over Europe. He earned his undergraduate and Masters degrees in Psychology from University of Alabama and his PhD in Psychology from Louisiana State University. After serving his internship at South East Louisiana Hospital, he continued his career at University of Virginia, where he was Assistant Professor at the UVA Medical School. He then spent the largest part of his career as Professor of Psychology at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine where he was a clinician, teacher and researcher.
He is survived by his wife, Charmion Hain; his daughter, Ginger Hain, and her husband Larry; his son, Doyle, and his wife, Kimberly; his son, Travis, and his wife, Lise; his daughter, Dr. Romaine Hain and her husband, Dr. Don Paoletti; his nephews Scott Smith and Hain Laramore and his niece, Cheala Smith and his cousins, Don Henderson and Sandra Henderson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashby, Nathan, Chase, Laura, Jack, Lily, Ro and Joey, and his great grandchildren, Aubrey and Jackson. Happily, his “Poppee-isms” are sure to be passed down through these generations!
Graveside services will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery on May 21 at 1:15 PM. Family and friends are welcome.
