Mr. Coker was born December 26, 1933, in Ft. Deposit, AL. He was preceded in death by his mother, Francis Coker and his grandson, Jay Wesley Hoggard.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bernie Thompson Coker, and his children Jeannie (Mike) Cagle of Nashville, TN, Judy (Phil) Hoggard of Searcy, AR, and Jan (Bryan) Pruitt of Birmingham, AL, a sister, Joe Ann (William) Norris, of Montgomery, AL, 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by another daughter who joined the family as a teenager, Brenda Lowe (Craig) Hunter of Atlanta, GA.
Mr. Coker attended the University of Alabama and graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in business management. He established the healthcare consulting firms Jackson and Coker and The Coker Group.
Mr. Coker had many interests including clocks, coins, antique automobiles, watches and knives. He enjoyed traveling and Alabama football. His wife says his proudest accomplishment was being a “girl daddy.”
He was an active member of the Homewood Church of Christ. In previous years, he had served as an elder in 3 different congregations. He was president of Georgia Agape, a child placement and foster care organization. He and his wife were also foster parents. He had a passion for foreign missions and he traveled to Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Ukraine and Siberia on various mission trips.
The family wishes to thank Senior Caring Service and especially Hattie, Kim, Victoria, Yolanda and Charity for the special care given to Mr. Coker in his last days.
