James and Claire were married in 1964. They then spent eight years in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, where Jim was Executive Director of the Mt. Vernon YMCA. In 1973, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri to own and operate Windjammer Travel Service. During his career in the travel industry, he was able to visit 86 countries all over the world. Upon retirement in 2000, Claire and Jim returned to Claire's childhood home in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. They were avid University of Alabama football fans.
James is survived by his sons, Keith Andrew Adams( two daughters Bryn and Harper) and David Rush Adams ( wife Lynne and her two children) both of St. Louis. He was preceded by his wife Claire and by Keith's wife Maureen Wilson Adams.
