
JAMES ROBERT CORCORAN, M.D., a retired General Surgeon and currently an Occupational Medicine Physician, passed away at East Jefferson General Hospital on May 13, 2014. A long-time resident of Metairie, LA, he was born in Birmingham, AL in 1937.
Dr. Corcoran attended Auburn University and received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic. He served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy as Ship’s Surgeon aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence.
Dr. Corcoran was Board certified by the American Board of Surgery and was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He practiced with the Browne-McHardy Clinic for 25 years. He was an Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at L.S.U. School of Medicine. During his career he served as Chief of Surgery at East Jefferson General Hospital, Lakeside Hospital and Kenner Regional Hospital. After retiring from surgical practice, Dr. Corcoran became on-site physician for Avondale Shipyard.
Dr. Corcoran served as an Elder at John Calvin Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Jefferson Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, S.E. Surgical Congress, American College of Occupational Medicine, American Legion Post 175, VFW Post 6640, the Frances Grevenberg Chapter MOWW and the Krewe of Bacchus.
Dr. Corcoran was predeceased by his parents, Kate and Roy Corcoran, and his brother, Roy Corcoran, Jr. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Dr. Corcoran is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Moffett Corcoran, two sons, James R. Corcoran, Jr. (Amy Traylor) of Birmingham and Charles R. Corcoran (Valerie Brosset) of Metairie, four granddaughters, Claire Frances and Julia Grace of Birmingham and Kate Margaret and Audrey Layne of Metairie.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at JOHN CALVIN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 4201 Transcontinental Drive, Metairie, LA on Saturday, May 17, 2014. In lieu of flowers please send donations to John Calvin Presbyterian Church.
A graveside service with be held in Birmingham at Elmwood Cemetery on Tuesday, May 20th at 11:00. Ridout’s Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) directing
