

James “Hosey” Hutson, age 84, a native of Bessemer, Alabama, passed away June 22, 2026. He earned a BS degree in Biology and an Art degree from Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo) in 1965. Following college, Hosey taught Biology at Berry High School, served in the Air Force, and worked for Daniel Ornamental Iron Company and U.S. Steel Company before establishing Blind Brook Building Company in the early 1970s. A gifted artist, woodworker, and builder, Hosey was widely respected for his craftsmanship in building, renovating, and maintaining houses. His work was featured in Southern Living, and he contributed numerous projects to Lowe’s Creative Ideas. As an artist, Hosey’s signature watercolor depicting a 7-Up can painted on the side of an old country barn, was included in Splash 6: The Magic of Texture, edited by Rachel Rubin Wolf, which showcases leading contemporary watercolorists. His creative spirit and meticulous workmanship left a lasting mark on homes and hearts alike.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Perkins Hutson; daughter, Heather Brock (Richard), sons, Jay Chandash (Holly), Josh (Patty), and David (Kristi); grandsons, Richard Jr., John Michael, and Carter; granddaughters Laine Burglass (Patrick), and Lily; and his beloved dog, Ivan. His parents James and Nellie Mae Hutson, his sisters Joan Perryman (Jim) and Nelda Pate preceded him in death. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
A memorial service honoring Hosey will be held June 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook where Hosey was an active member for many years. A visitation at the church will follow the service.
