James “Jim” Andrew Robins, age 77, of Homewood, Alabama was called home to be with his Lord on Sunday, May 24, 2026. Jim was a beloved brother and friend, and we look forward with great hope to the day we will be eternally reunited.
In honor of Jim, a celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 4th, 2026 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel commencing at 11:00 am. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation beginning at 10 am as we celebrate Jim and our Lord together.
Jim was born on September 30, 1948, to Herbert ‘Bert’ Robins and Kathryn Robins. He was raised and educated in Homewood graduating from Shades Valley High School in 1966 with an Advanced Academic Diploma and Samford University in 1970 with a BS, Magna Cum Laude in Mathematics with a minor in Physics. Jim was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Honorary Leadership Fraternity, Trident Scholastic Honor Society, Pi Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Fraternity and Samford University Dean’s List.
Following graduation, Jim’s interests turned toward computers where he spent his career as a programmer and then Senior Systems Analyst for Liberty National Life Insurance Company, as well as Sonat, BCBS of Alabama, and Protective Life Insurance Company. Retiring in 2012, Jim devoted much of his time to tinkering with vehicles, lawn mowers, and appliances. His skills were shared with neighbors as needed. If it was mechanical or electrical, he would study it with the same intensity of a main frame computer and repair it. He was a perfectionist and consequently even the smallest projects were lengthy. Jim had an adventuresome spirit and enjoyed trips down the Colorado River, plane rides, hot air balloon rides, and a bungy jump. Although not a cook, he enjoyed food more than a dachshund and international cuisine in particular.
Jim was a kind, gentle person who was devoted to family but sometimes found it difficult to express his feelings. He was a man of honesty and integrity whose word was his bond. It was not in his nature to tell a lie and in a childlike way, he could not understand anyone who would. Jims’s world was colored by his struggle with childhood diabetes from age 15. He fought the disease and resulting issues of kidney and heart failure with courage and no quit attitude. In Gods perfect timing, the victory has been won and he is eternally healed.
Jim is survived by his sister Marsha and brother Herb (Margie) as well as many beloved cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Bert Robins and mother, Kathryn Robins.
The family wants to express their sincere gratitude to his two caregivers, Bonnie Reed and Amy Ford who lovingly attended to him, the residents & staff of Somerby who encouraged and befriended him, and the amazing doctors and nurses of the ER and ICU at UAB/St Vincents who treated him with such respect and compassion until he went to his heavenly home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association or Trinity United Methodist Church.
