James Leon Swindal

James Leon Swindal of Birmingham, Alabama, was called home to be with the Lord on July 7th, 2026. He was born on August 4th, 1927, in Mount Olive, Alabama, the youngest of twelve children. Leon lived a life defined by faith, service, and song.

On May 9th, 1953, Leon married the love of his life, Betty Joyce Hodges. Together, they built a beautiful life and shared 73 years filled with affection, laughter, and love.

A devoted deacon of Vestavia Primitive Baptist Church, Leon was a gifted song leader. He was a pioneer for many singing schools throughout the southern United States. His steady presence, warm voice, and deep devotion to his church family blessed countless lives and reflected his lifelong passion for music.

Leon was also a highly skilled brick mason whose careful workmanship and dedication can be seen in many buildings and projects throughout the community. He generously shared his talents beyond his trade—through music, woodworking, and gardening. He was a friend to all, constantly lending his hand to those around him for tasks big or small.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Swindal; his children, Leigh Shepherd and Bruce Swindal; six grandchildren; and seven great‑grandchildren. Leon’s family, faith, and work were the heart of his life, and his loving memory will live on in all who knew him.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 beginning at 10:00 am with the funeral service following at 11:00 am at Vestavia Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Kinard Cemetery in West Blocton.
