Jean was the daughter of Emmett Colquit Ray and Minnie Jones Ray of Ensley. She graduated from Ensley High School in 1938 and furthered her education at Montevallo where she graduated with a concentration in Music. As a young woman Jean was a much sought after soloist in many local area churches. Jean married John T. McCarley on December 21, 1942 just weeks before he left to serve in the army during WWII.
Jean was an enthusiastic participant in all of the activities of her three children as they were growing up. She was also an avid bridge player. Jean was the consummate volunteer for the Big Oak Ranch Auxiliary and worked tirelessly to further the mission of this organization whose work meant so much to her. Jean and John both loved playing golf and they treasured the many friendships they made while engaged in this activity over the course of their lives together. Jean was a faithful member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School class.
Jean was preceded in death by her much loved husband of seventy three years John T. McCarley, Jr. and by her son
John T. McCarley, III. She is survived by her daughters Mimie
McCarley and Caroline McCarley (Dan Harkinson) and her daughter in law Leslie Pugh McCarley. Jean leaves behind nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren of whom she was exceedingly proud.
A memorial service for Jean will be Sunday Feb. 18, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Mountain Brook Baptist Church followed by a time of visitation. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Mountain Brook Baptist Church or The Big Oak Ranch.
