

She grew up in Pensacola, Florida on the Bay she loved so dearly. She was a graduate of the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Delta social sorority. She was an ardent supporter of the College of Arts & Sciences, serving on the Leadership Board. She proudly served in many roles at St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands and was also an active member in the Linly Heflin Unit for thirty-four years, an organization that provides scholarships for Alabama women to attend Alabama colleges.
In 1992, Jean became a founding member of the UAB School of Nursing Board of Visitors (BOV). In 1994, she became the BOV’s second chair, serving in the position until 1998 and leading the Board through four fundraisers. She said that she got her passion for volunteerism from her mother and that she matched that with causes she held dear to her heart. She and her late husband, Jack, invested in the cause of UAB nursing education through the endowment of the Jean Riley Tomlinson Endowed Nursing Scholarship. Jean later became a leader in the founding and development of the UAB School of Nursing Junior Board of Visitors.
She also loved tennis, golf, and the University of Alabama football and basketball.
She was preceded in death by her late loving husband, Jack O. Tomlinson, Sr. She is survived by her two sons, Jack O’Neal Tomlinson, Jr. (Connie) and Frank Hilton-Green Tomlinson, Sr. (Patricia), her five grandchildren, Shawn Tomlinson Simpkins (Josh), Riley Bowen Tomlinson (Jenilee ), Bryan O’Neal Tomlinson (Lauren), Lindsey Tomlinson Druhan (Patrick) and Frank Hilton-Green Tomlinson, Jr. (Emily) , and nine great-grandchildren.
The Burial Office officiated by the Rev. H. Huey Gardner will be Monday, June 22, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Randolph Hall at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her memory to either St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands, 1910 12th Avenue South, Birmingham, Al 35205, or UAB School of Nursing , 1720 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, Al 35294-1210. Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood (879-3401).
