

She was born on January 24, 1938 in Birmingham, AL. A graduate of Phillips High School in 1955, she attended Brenau University in Gainesville, GA and the University of Alabama, where she met her husband, Sid Mabowitz. Mrs. Mabowitz lived in Bronx, New York where she and her husband had 3 children. She also lived in New Rochelle New York, Forestdale, AL and spent last 24 years of her life in Homewood, AL. After moving back to Alabama, Mrs. Mabowitz received her Bachelors in Science degree and Master’s degree in Elementary Education from UAB. She was an educator for 19 years and taught at Gardendale Elementary School, Fourth and Sixth grades and at Banks Middle School, Eighth grade Science.
Mrs. Mabowitz was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sidney Mabowitz , parents Graydon L. Newman, Sr. and Mary Grimes Newman ; brother: Graydon L. Newman, Jr.and her son in law Nicholas Calamas. She is survived by her son: Mr. Eric Mabowitz (Phyllis Mabowitz) and her two daughters: Mrs. Beth Calamas and Dr. Maurine Black (Michael Black); her grandchildren: Rod Ware Jr., Sydney Mabowitz Johnson, Emily Black, Sarah Black, and Flynn Mabowitz and her great-grandchildren: Ethan and Elijah Johnson
The family will receive friends Monday, November 3, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Ridout’s Valley Chapel. Funeral services will also be held with Chaplin Will Lantrip officiating at Ridout’s Valley Chapel on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
