Jeannette L. Ray

Jeannette Leslie Ray, a resident of Mountain Brook, died on August 10, 2021, after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen Cecil Leslie and Sue Page Leslie of Tuscaloosa. Jeanne was born in Birmingham March 31, 1929. She received her early education in Tuscaloosa, but graduated from Ramsay High School in Birmingham. She was a graduate of the University of Alabama where she was a member of Chi Omega social sorority and Theta Sigma Phi honorary fraternity. In October 1950- she married William H. Ray. Jr. They lived their entire married life in the Birmingham area where they raised their family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Ray Hoye (Jim) and Katherine Ray Gaines (Buddy); four grandchildren: Leslie Elizabeth Peerson, William Wade Peerson, Julia Gaines Spencer (Josh), Mary Gaines Brocato (Brian); seven great grandchildren: Kylie Peerson, Sterling Wade Peerson, Ethan and Zachary Spencer, Fletcher, Mia and Joe Brocato and by one brother, Owen Cecil Leslie, Jr. and his family.

Jeanne participated in various activities of the schools attended by her children. She was active in Girl Scout work, Civiettes, and especially her church, Canterbury United Methodist, where she worked in the UMW, was chairman of the Altar Guild, served on the Official Board and was a member of the J.O.Y. Sunday School Class. She was a long time member of the Eva Comer Home Board of Directors. Other activities included Hill ‘n Dale Garden Club, La Lumiere Study Club, Silhouettes and Ballerina Dance Clubs and the “Sewing Club”. She especially enjoyed golf with the Ladies Division of the Birmingham Country Club. Her dearest work and joy was her family.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 in the main sanctuary of Canterbury United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 10 am.

The family has suggested that in lieu of remembrances, memorials may be made to the church, John Croyle’s Big Oak Ranch, or a charity of your choice.
