Joan (Joann) Starr Caputo Denman, age 82, of Birmingham died peacefully at home June 6, 2019. Graveside services will be at 11 am Monday, June 10, 2019 at Forest Lawn Gardens in Anniston, Alabama with Bill Johnston officiating.
Joann was born November 27, 1936 to the late Henry Brockman Starr and Virginia Brittain Starr. She is preceded in death by her husband John Hugh Denman, Jr., her brother Henry Brockman Starr, Jr. and sister Carole Starr Cain, and her dog Snowy.
Survivors include her son: Michael Starr Caputo (Karen), granddaughters Courtney Caputo Pierce (Evan) and Elizabeth Hester Caputo, stepdaughters Susan Denman Breeden (Ken) and Sandra Denman Grinsfelder (Jim). She is also survived by a brother-in-law Harry Leland Cain and sister-in-law Jeanette Miller Starr, nieces Janey Starr Smitherman and Julia Cain, nephews Henry Brockman Starr III (Karen), David Gordon Starr (Kathy), Matthew Starr and Alan Cohen Cain along with many cousins and dear friends.
She was a 1954 graduate of Anniston High School and a graduate of Birmingham Southern College (BS) and Florida State University (Masters). After retiring from the Alabama Department of Human Resources as service supervisor, she began a private practice helping families adopt children. She especially loved tap dancing and enjoyed the many years she spent with Time Step Studios.
She was a member of the Wilson-Wear-Redding Sunday School Class at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. The family would like to express appreciation for the class’s support and friendships. They would also like to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Grandview Medical Center, her caregivers, Comfort Care Hospice and Eastwood Animal Clinic who generously cared for her beloved dog during her illness.
Pallbearers are Walter Williamson, John Williamson, John Burks, Hugh Turner, James Head III and Evan Pierce.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church or Small Paws Rescue.
