John was born and raised in the East Hill area of Pensacola, Florida to Howard & Angie Blackmon. His parents possessed to a high degree all the positive character traits people admire. These traits were passed on to John and shaped him into a person that people admired and appreciated all his life. He was a son, husband, father, brother, friend and military veteran. John was a level-headed businessman with impeccable positive character traits. He worked until just a few days before his death.
John was educated in the Pensacola public schools until he moved to Marion Institute for the 10th through 12th grades. It was Marion that created John’s “spit and polish” appearance, attention to detail and military bearing which served John so well throughout his lifetime. His good sense of humor balanced out his otherwise “no nonsense” approach to most situations he encountered during his life. After graduating from Marion, John attended and graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. It was at Alabama that John met his wife, Jenny Andrews. They were married for 55 years. Jenny was devoted to John until the day he died.
Upon graduating from Alabama, John served as an officer in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant and aide to General John Singlaub. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, John spent most of his business career as an investment advisor and manager for Merrill Lynch that took him & his family all over the southern half of the United States. John field-trained Labrador retrievers in his early years, and his love for dogs only increased as time went on, always having at least one beloved four-legged friend by his side. John & Jenny remained lifelong Alabama fans - Roll Tide! John also greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
John was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Ann Cunningham. He is survived by Jenny, his children, Ashley Nellis (Jake), Talmadge Blackmon (Chris), and Lindsay Harrell (Trey), his grandchildren, Hope & William, and his older brother, Talmadge Blackmon (Cheryl).
