

John Sommerville Kennedy Jr. (Jack) was born December 6, 1929 in Akron, Ohio to Jack Sommerville Kennedy Sr. and Corrine Schleicher Kennedy. He passed away following a brief illness on September, 11 surrounded by his family. Jack was raised in Ohio where he graduated from Shaker High School. He excelled in football and basketball and loved all sports. His high school sweetheart was his future bride Dotsy. He was a camp counselor and enjoyed serving in the kitchen and played revelry and taps on the bugle. He received his BS Degree from Miami University, Oxford Ohio where he was President of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He also graduated Harvard University in 1973, where he attended the Advanced Management Program.
Upon graduation from Miami, Jack joined United States Steel Corporation. He was appointed to numerous sales positions within the company working in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Atlanta, Houston and Birmingham. Jack’s career spanned forty years. He had a strong work ethic and loved what he did. Jack retired as General Manager Fairfield Works in Birmingham in 1995.
Jack was an active member at the First Christian Church in Birmingham. He was an avid golfer and was a member at Inverness Country club. He played golf until the week preceding his passing, when he scored his age. He also cherished his past memberships at various other clubs including Canterbury Golf Club in Shaker Heights, OH; Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, PA, and Shoal Creek in Birmingham. His primary interests were his family and his friends. He had a deep faith in God and served his calling in life.
He is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy (Dotsy) Kennedy of 65 years, his two sons John S. Kennedy III, Curtin Quay Kennedy, his two daughters, Katharine Bender and Janet Kelley. He was blessed with ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church on September 19th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Christian Church, 4954 Valleydale Road, Birmingham, AL 35242, or to a charity of your choice.
