

John Vincent Milan, age 89, died Sunday May 7, 2017. He was a faithful and long term member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. John was preceded in death by: his parents Joe and Kathleen Milan, his sister Mary Katherine Zito, his great grandson Carson Matthew Brewer, and his loving wife of 56 years Rose Marie Milan. He is survived by: his two sisters Elizabeth Criswell (Phillip) and Carol Zarichnak, his three children, Joe Milan, John Milan (Melissa) and Kathy Brewer (Mark) his five grandchildren, Will Milan, Emily Milan, Caitlin Milan, Marcus Brewer (Cheri) and Marie Brewer, and his four great grandchildren, Morgan, Sean, Benjamin, and Madeline Brewer. Following his graduation from Phillips High School, John served in U.S. Army during World War II. Succeeding his service to our country, John had a successful business career. He founded Milan Grocery on the Southside of Birmingham where he served as proprietor for 25 years. He concluded his working years at G&D grocery, Piggly Wiggly, and Marino's Market, retiring in 2004. John generously served his community in many ways, one of which was being a founding member of the Roma Country Club in Homewood, which promoted fellowship among families. In his spare time, John particularly enjoyed gardening. He was also a sincerely devoted husband, father, and grandfather who greatly valued the Italian tradition of family time on Sunday afternoons. The family would like to thank his devoted caregiver, Tracie Williams for her many years of service in caring for Mr. Milan and also the staff at Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veteran's Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood and the Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery.
