John Lelus Montgomery, Jr., lovingly known as Butch by long-time friends, passed away on April 5, 2020. He was a lifelong resident of the Birmingham area. John attended Fairview United Methodist Church for over 60 years. Upon its closure he joined Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Friendship Class. He was a proud veteran of the United State Navy and traveled the world aboard the USS Wisconsin Battleship. John worked at US Steel and retired after 45 years of service. He was an avid Alabama football fan with the wardrobe to prove it.
John is survived by, his loving wife of 63 years Rhonda Putnam Montgomery, daughter Suzanne Montgomery, his son John Montgomery, III (Leigh Anne) and grandsons John Montgomery IV and Hans Montgomery.
The family will have a private burial at Alabama National Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209. The family greatly appreciates their exemplary kindness during John’s extended illness.
