Joseph J. Alfano

Joseph J. Alfano, age 85 of Vestavia, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. Joe was born on February 29th, 1932, and is survived by: Antoinette Gagliano Alfano, his wife of sixty-two years; his daughter Maria Alfano Lilly (Shane); sons John Alfano, Joe Alfano (Joanie), and Chris Alfano (Heather); grandchildren Leigh Anne, Anna, Joseph, Christopher, Alyssa, Lena, and Isabella; his sisters Rene Alfano Premier and Mary Jo Alfano Huffstuttler.

Joe retired at age 55 from the family business, Alfano Grocery in North Birmingham. He spent his retirement attending daily mass, working on his award-winning vintage 1955 Buick, and most importantly spending every moment he could with the love of his life Antoinette and their grandchildren.

Affectionately known as "Junior", a nickname given to him by his siblings, Joe lost his father John Alfano at a young age in 1948. This added to his core value of devotion to family. He was an amazing father, always leading by example with his tireless work ethic and devotion to the Catholic Church. He taught us all how to be a loving, caring, responsible, and honest husband, father, son, brother, and friend. We will miss him always.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 23rd from 9-10:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church on Oxmoor Road in Homewood. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. with graveside service afterwards at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to the Dominican Monastery of St. Jude at 143 County Road 20 E, Marbury, Alabama 36051.
