Joseph Malcolm Kyle, Jr., age 73, of Birmingham, AL, passed away on July 4, 2023. He was born on October 16, 1949. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Malcolm Kyle, Sr., and Janice Maxwell Kyle Buckner.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Morden Kyle; his daughters Tara Dacre Kyle (Eric Kolovson) of Westport, CT, and Megan Ross Kyle of Chicago, IL; grandchildren Jack Kyle Kolovson and Delia Riley Kolovson; his brothers Robert Austin Kyle (Jeri) of Birmingham, AL, and Lewis Maxwell Kyle of Deerfield Beach, FL. Joe is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Mary Riley of Farmington, CT.
Joe graduated from Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, LA, in 1968 and attended college at the United States Coast Guard Academy, graduating in 1972. He later earned a MBA degree. He retired after 20 years of service in the United States Coast Guard, remaining in Juneau, Alaska, as a consultant and lobbyist for the fishing industry.
As a part of his spiritual journey, Joe attended ACTS, a lay Catholic retreat, during which he formed a lifetime friendship with Larry Lopez. He later partnered with Larry in the Bubble Bath Car Wash business located in San Antonio, TX.
Upon his second retirement, he and his wife, Lisa, relocated to Birmingham, AL. Joe and Lisa traveled extensively, including to the home they built together in Mexico, on European cruises, to visit Lisa’s parents, Alice and Harold Morden, in Ireland, and to see family and friends throughout the United States. Everywhere he went, he took great joy in connecting with people from all walks of life. In his last years, he co-chaired the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. He spent his retirement focused on being together with family and taking care of his loved ones. The family is grateful to Ben Satterwhite, a friend since childhood, who was a blessing to Joe in many ways and especially during his illness.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for fall of 2023.
