Kathryn Werner Ragland

Kathryn Ragland, age 92, passed away peacefully at home with family on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. A lifelong resident of Birmingham, AL, she was a graduate of Woodlawn High School (class of 1948) and Birmingham-Southern College (Phi Beta Kappa, class of 1952). For the first 34 years of her life Kathryn was a member of First Lutheran Church Birmingham, then a member of First Methodist Church Birmingham for 49 years, and of Irondale United Methodist Church from 2013 until her death. Active in the church throughout her life, she was a long-standing member of the United Methodist Women, participated in many Bible studies, and enjoyed participating in mission trips. She was also active in the Fair Haven Retirement Home Auxiliary, serving as its president, and for many years was a volunteer in the Nearly New Shop at Fair Haven.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John August and Hilda Schoel Werner, and by her granddaughter Shelly Kincaid Darling. She is survived by her four children Denise Shaw, Shirley Kincaid, Denny Ragland (Susan), and Renee Bishop (Ron); 6 grandchildren Randy Shaw (Rachel), Reese Kincaid (Megan), Elizabeth Ragland Phipps (Nate), Kate Ragland, Travis Bishop and Emily Bishop; 7 greatgrandchildren; and her siblings Miriam Hartley and John A. Werner, Jr (Martha).

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her care givers Ester Namolo, Cynthia Thomas and Ashley Reid. Also, a special acknowledgement and thanks to her daughter-in-law, Susan Ragland for her love and care for Kathryn these last few months.

Visitation will be held at Irondale United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 18, 2023 beginning at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Before she died, Kathryn expressed the wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Irondale United Methodist Church or the Fountain of Love at Fair Haven.
