Thompson, Jr., Kelly Thomas (73), of Montevallo, passed away peacefully at home on January 30, 2023. He was born in Birmingham, and was raised in Cahaba Heights with his brothers and sisters having fun with cousins and neighborhood friends where he developed lifelong relationships and an appreciation for God’s gift of love. Tommy’s childhood was full of adventure, which he fondly recalled often.
Tommy was predeceased by his father Kelly Thomas Thompson, Sr., mother Annie Ruth Hawkins Thompson, son Joseph Brian Thompson, son-in-law Brandon Scott Bates, sister Debra Gail Thompson Short, brothers William Doyle Thompson and Kirby Thompson. He is survived and missed by his loving wife Penny Chambers Thompson; children, Carol Anselmo Hollinger (Ben), Rhonda Thompson Mitchell (Dennis), Amy Thompson Bates, and Marty Lee Warren; grandchildren, Carsen Faith Hinds Register (Chris), Caden Lee Hinds (Ally), Luke Thomas Mitchell, Brody Brasher Mitchell, and Tyson Chambers McGuire; great grandchildren, Sawyer Montgomery Semmes Register, Rose Kyra Mitchell, and Ruby Charlotte Hinds; sisters, Janice Thompson Johnson, Nelda Thompson Shiflett, and Rhonda Thompson Brasher; and brother Jere Wayne Thompson (Dolores), as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends who loved him very much.
Tommy was a member of Westwood Baptist Church where he accepted Christ and was baptized along with his daughter Carol and grandchildren Carsen and Caden. Most recently he had attended services at Community Baptist Church in Maylene, AL. He had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Tommy spent much of his spare time researching topics of interest, reading his Bible, and browsing the net to keep up with local and world-wide events. He was never scared to take on new opportunities, and did everything he attempted with the goal of mastering each task. He had strong values and an unforgettable positive energy. While he worked in various industries, Tommy spent most of his career as an ironworker (18 years at U.S. Steel in Birmingham) and 25 years in construction materials with Vulcan Materials Company. Since retiring in 2015, he enjoyed every minute that he was able to spend with family and friends and his time at the lake with his fishing buddies.
These words (author unknown) are so true of him. “His heart of this world may have failed, but his spirit was stubbornly strong.”
The family will receive friends at Cahaba Heights Baptist Church, 3800 Crosshaven Drive, Birmingham, AL 35243, on Friday, February 3, beginning at 10 a.m. with the funeral service following at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124.
