There will be a viewing of the body between 10 AM and 11 AM followed by a service from 11 AM to 12 PM at Ridout's Valley Chapel ,1800 Oxmoor Rd. Homewood, AL. After the service, there will be a funeral procession to Holly Pond cemetery about 60 miles north of Birmingham scheduled for 2 PM.
There will be a military ceremony honoring Larry at the gravesite as he was an honorably discharged Navy veteran and did two tours of duty in Vietnam serving our country.
Larry was the oldest twin boy of Wilton Eugene Lambert and Ovalee Drake Lambert, born on December 20, 1948 at Baptist Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Larry was a man of many skills, talents and abilities. He was really a renaissance man in many ways.
He was an entrepreneur and was self employed for many years working as a Building Contractor. He had a unique genius in being able to transform the inside of someone’s home into something beautiful in it’s simplicity, elegance and style. He taught himself drafting and could fix just about anything and could certainly do literally anything he put his mind to
And as brilliant at he was at his craft and as much as he loved that business, he also was a lover of theater, and used his building and contracting skills working for Town and Gown theater in Birmingham for numerous years. He loved working on Broadway productions that would come to Birmingham and interacting with the cast and all the crew.
Larry was one of the most handsome and best dressed people you ever met and he loved working at the Cambridge shop in Vestavia. He worked there for a number of years helping people buy clothes that made them feel good and look great and as usual everyone loved Larry and he was always the best sales person.
He was the strength training coach for the UAB blazers basketball team for a championship season in the 1980’s, he was a golden gloves boxer in the Navy, he was also very athletic and loved training women in bodybuilding at UAB. He loved the opportunity to help woman get stronger and feel more confident and secure in themselves.
And in the words of his son Gene, “ Dad loved animals and was the toughest SOB around.Beat skin cancer and survived multiple near death experiences while saving many lives over seas. He loved to cook and eat. Loved hard and fully with his whole heart. Crazy generous and would do literally anything for those that he loved.
Larry was married to Betty Mims for over 20 years and subsequently divorced however they remained incredibly loving friends and were the parents of 2 spectacular kids, now grown, Marbury Hendon and Edwin Eugene(Gene) Lambert.
He loved coaching Gene, especially in baseball as Gene was growing up, it was one of the great joys of his life. He Loved his 2 children and would do anything for them and they loved and adored him as well.
Larry’s sister Rhonda is reminded of funny moments when for many years he would come to Mike’s and her home during the Alabama games. She says that’s how Tailer their now 15 year old Maltipoo learned to drink beer and bark Roll Tide Roll. Every Saturday he looked for Larry to come so he could have a Lick. He would stand at glass door and just wait on him when he got his Alabama sweater on he knew Larry would be driving up with a paper bag in his hand. He loved Larry so much and would sit in his lap waiting and watching for his next lick.
Larry never met a stranger and was beloved and a blessing to everyone that ever had the honor and privilege to know him. He was kind, patient, loving, generous, funny, brilliant, wise and a great listener who truly cared about others. He was genuinely one of the nicest people you could ever meet. You would walk away after conversation with him thinking that you just got through speaking with your best friend.
Larry will always live in our hearts and through each of us, the best parts of him will be the gifts of his life that we will share forward with all those that we come in contact with each day.
Larry worked, played and loved hard and loved God and Christ Jesus and is now resting in the arms of the Lord along with Dad, his son Heath, Aunt Clara, Mawmaw, Grandaddy Roscoe all of his loved ones that passed on before him. We Love You Larry and will miss your beautiful presence in our lives Always! May you always feel the sun on your face, the wind at your back and the love of God in your heart! He is survived by his Mother, Ovalee Drake Lambert, his twin brother, Garrett Lambert, his Sister Rhonda Lambert Milstead , Brother-in- Law Mike Milstead, his son Edwin Eugene(Gene) Lambert and his wife Carly Burns Lambert and Michael Tyler Todd, Stepson to Gene and Step Grandson to Larry, his daughter Marbury Hendon and her 2 children, Larry’s Grandsons, Christopher Hendon and Riley Hendon, Larry’s ex wife and best friend, Mother to their 2 kids Gene and Marbury, Betty Mims Sloan, Niece Hayley Milstead Davis Roberts and her husband Jeff Davis and their daughter, Larry’s Gand Niece Bryant Roberts, Nephew Michael Milstead, his wife Kelly Milstead and Grand Nephew Drake Milstead and Grand Niece Mia Milstead, numerous wonderful cousins and other family members, and his best fur buddy and sidekick, his beautiful cat Reba who was a big part of Larry’s life
