Laurence Hanliang THE, also known as Laurence Sebastianus Tedjarahardja, THE Han Liang, and affectionately known as “Papi,” “Opa,” and “Engang,” passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born in Bandung, Indonesia, on May 17, 1940, Laurence lived a life marked by perseverance, devotion to family, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. In May 1982 at the age of 42, he immigrated to Homewood, Alabama, with his family in pursuit of new opportunities and a brighter future. His journey embodied the spirit of the American Dream, built through hard work, sacrifice, and a steadfast commitment to his family.

For more than twenty years, Laurence served as manager of Peking Restaurant in Center Point, Alabama, where he became known for his strong work ethic and dependable leadership. After retiring from the restaurant industry, he continued working in the stock department at Parisian/Belk. In 2011, he was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), a challenge he faced with remarkable strength and resilience throughout the years that followed.

Laurence and his wife, Francisca Budihardjo, shared 57 years of marriage. While living in Homewood, nine years at Maison de Ville Apartments, they purchased their dream home in 1991. Together, they chose Homewood for its outstanding schools and strong sense of community, creating a foundation that would benefit generations of their family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, THE Liang Seng and Tjan Kim Lie; his brothers, THE Han Liong, THE Han Bie, THE Han Kiat, THE Han Gie, and THE Han Beng; and his beloved wife, Francisca Budihardjo “Lee Swan Nio”. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory, including his daughters, Viviana Maria Kimlian Tedjarahardja Smith and Monica Maria Aileen Tedjarahardja Brooks; his grandchildren, Kasey Frances Smith, Allison Claire Smith, and Jasper Emerson Tedjarahardja Brooks; his sisters, THE Yan Nio, THE Tjio Nio, and THE Giok Nio; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

Laurence will be remembered for his silly sense of humor, quiet strength, generous heart, enduring determination, and deep love for his family. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the countless memories shared by those who knew and loved him.
