January 2, 1927 to Elkan and Aline Moog Leva and moved to Birmingham where she attended Ramsey
High School and Rabbi Milton Grafman’s first confirmation class at Temple Emanu-El before going to
Washington University and then Birmingham Southern.
She married the love of her life, Sam Picard, Jr. on May 9, 1948 and enjoyed 53 years of happy
marriage before his death in 2001. They had three children: Nancy Picard (Clif St. Germain), Sam “Sandy”
Picard, III—who predeceased her— (Bonny), and Alan Myer Picard (Beth). She is also survived by
grandchildren, John Elkan Picard, Lily Caroline Picard (Taylor Harrison), Gabrielle St. Germain Colon
(Taylor), Clayton Trotter (Blair), Davidson Park, and Gardner Park (Elise); by great-grandchildren, Alastair
Picard, James Trotter, Liza Trotter, and Henry Trotter; and by her nephew, Don Picard (Kate) and niece,
Gail Picard (David Graham).
Along with her cousins, Isabelle Sterne and Dorothy Unger, she founded Kitchen Things, selling
gourmet cookware, giving cooking lessons, and traveling abroad to attend cooking classes with the likes
of Marcella Hazan. Until her last illness, Lenore remained witty, vivacious, strong-willed, solicitous of
others, and engaged with the world. The family is grateful for the assistance of Tresa McConnico,
Felecia Major, and the other staff at Home Instead as well as Comfort Care Hospice who cared for her so
lovingly.
A funeral will be held on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 10:30, at Elmwood Cemetery, Ridout’s
Valley Chapel in charge of arrangements. Because Lenore despaired over the separation of families at
our border, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Immigrants’ Rights Project of the
ACLU or to the Rabbi Grafman Endowment Fund for Temple Emanu-El.
