Leslie S. WRIGHT

Leslie Stephen Wright, Jr. of Columbiana, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, the 21st of July 2020. He was 78 years of age. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Elijah Christian Wright. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jane Wright; daughter, Millie Kay Wright Drum (Rob); son, Leslie Stephen Wright, III (Kelli); brother, John Wright (Libby); and step-sons, Joel M. Self (Lisa) and Cameron M. Self. Stephen is also survived by his six grandchildren, Robert H. Drum, Jr. (Amy), Jake Drum (Ashley), Josh Drum (Kelsey), Mary Grace Ray (Jesse), Anna Kate Wright, and Abbie Wright; and four great grandchildren, Everette Drum, Hank Drum, Wells Drum, and Wyn Drum. Born in Birmingham, Alabama to Dr. Leslie Stephen Wright, Sr. and Lolla Wurtele Wright, Steve earned his B.A. degree in 1964 from Samford University and then graduated from Cumberland School of Law of Samford University (J.D., cum laude) in 1966. Steve was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1966 and practiced for 54 years prior to retiring. Stephen practiced at the law firm of Najjar Denaburg from 1987 until his retirement where he was a shareholder and Senior Member of the Matrimonial and Family Law Group. His primary areas of practice was Matrimonial Law, Family Law, and Divorce Mediation. He was selected for membership in Phi Alpha Delta and was a curia Honoring Member of Cumberland School of Law. During Steve's distinguished law career, he was a member of many professional associations including the Alabama State Bar, where he was a charter member of the Family Law Section; Birmingham Bar Association where he served on the Executive Committee, the Domestic Relations Committee, and the Family and Juvenile Courts Procedures Committee. He was admitted to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama; the Association of Trial Lawyers, American Bar Association; Alabama Trial Lawyers Association; and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Stephen was a fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers where he served as a member of the Board of Governors. He served as President and Treasurer for the Alabama Chapter. He was certified as a mediator by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and was a member of the Alabama Academy of Attorney Mediators. In addition, he was a fellow in the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In 2001, Steve was selected as Lawyer of the Year by the BLSA. In 1965-66, he was selected to appear in the Edition of Who's Who among students in American Universities and Colleges. Steve was recognized over numerous years in Best Attorneys in Alabama; the Best Lawyers in America from 1995-2020; Top Attorneys in Alabama; and was AV Preeminent Rated-Highest Possible Peer Review in Legal Ability and Ethical Standards from 2000-2020. Steve will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, and a gifted attorney. A member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church and the Birmingham Pheasant Hunters, Steve was a giant of man in body and soul. Friends are cordially invited to the visitation being held from five o'clock in the evening until seven o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 27th of July 2020, at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood. Private graveside services will be conducted for the family only in the Wright Family Estate of Elmwood Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorials honoring the life of Leslie Stephen Wright, Jr. may be directed to Alabama Gulf Coast Chapter of The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society located at 3500 Blue Lake Drive, Suite 225, Birmingham, Alabama 35243.
