

Louis George Lavas passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Mr. Lavas was preceded in death by his father George Michael Lavas, his mother, Cornelia Stratakis Lavas, brother Michael George Lavas, sister, Katie Lavas Fortunis, sister, Bess Lavas Kontogianos, and sister, Penelope Lavas Sofoulis. He leaves his memory to be cherished by his wife Madge Noblitt Lavas ; his two daughters, Wyna Lavas Hebson (Tony) and Nena Cornelia Lavas; his two grandsons, Camden Louis Hebson (Carolyn) and Ryan James Hebson (Jessica); and his two great grandchildren, Henry Luke Hebson and Alice Elisabeth Hebson.
Mr. Lavas was born in the Norwood community of Birmingham on October 13, 1922. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Europe during World War II. After the war, Mr. Lavas founded the Social Grill Restaurant and operated it as one of the most popular restaurants in Birmingham until his retirement in 1977.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 21, 2013, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America located at 307 South 19th Street, Birmingham, Alabama. The wake will follow the visitation on Thursday, at 7 p.m. The funeral will be on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross-Holy Trinity Cathedral with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
