

Dr. Lowell Thomas Sheffield (Tom) died November 18, 2015. Born October 25, 1928, in Montgomery, Alabama, he was the son of Lowell Thomas Sheffield, Sr. and Donna Fulton Lee Sheffield. Dr. Sheffield grew up in Headland, Alabama, and graduated from Georgia Military Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, now known as Woodward Academy. He graduated from Emory University and received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. After completing his internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Sheffield served in the United States Air Force as a medical officer in Germany. Upon completing his military duty, he returned to the University of Alabama School of Medicine for a residency in internal medicine. Following his residency he completed a fellowship in cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston then returned to serve on the staff of the University of Alabama School of Medicine, now known as UAB School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, as a professor of cardiology. Dr. Sheffield was a long time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham. He enjoyed many interests outside his medical career, including listening to opera, cross country skiing, traveling and sailing. He was an early user of computers, even building his own. Always the tinkerer, in his teen years he built radios and stereos, using parts from his father's drive-in movie speakers, and was often called upon to operate and repair the projectors in his father's movie theatres. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn Smith Sheffield, and is survived by his daughter Donna Sheffield of Pensacola, Florida; his son Elliott Sheffield and wife Barbara, grandsons Austin and Clay, all of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and his sister Lila Howland and brother-in-law Dr. Slocum Howland, of Highlands, North Carolina. Memorial services will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham, December 12, at 1:00 PM.
