She was born on October 20, 1937 in Birmingham, Alabama and was a lifelong resident.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther William Barner and Martha Morrow Barner. She was also predeceased by her sister, Martee Barner Lanier Scott.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, James Willoughby Wood, two sons, James Willoughby Wood, Jr. of Huntsville and Luther William Wood (Susan), two grandchildren, Taylor Barner Wood and Windham Willoughby Wood all of Jacksonville, Florida. She is also survived by two nephews and five nieces.
She attended Lakeview Elementary School and graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1955 and she was presented by Redstone the same year. She attended Mary Baldwin College for one year and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1959 where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Years later she returned to college and earned a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama Birmingham in 1992. She was a lifelong member of Independent Presbyterian Church, the Junior League of Birmingham and Little Club.
She taught elementary school for 37 years and retired in 2008. She spent the last 31 years of her career teaching Kindergarten and First Grade at Highlands School (formerly Highlands Day School). Next to her family, friends and pets, her greatest joy in life was teaching school. She often said she learned more from her students than she taught them.
Her Memorial Service will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 11am with internment in the Garden Columbarium at the church.
