passed away Saturday, October 5, 2013. She was born on October 19, 1919 to Maggie Burton Gauntt and Dewitt T. Gauntt. She was married to Walter VanBuren Gibson who predeceased her. Margaret worked for 46 years as an executive secretary; retiring from Alabama Power Company in Birmingham after 26 years of service. A graduate of Tallassee High School she attended Huntingdon College and served on the Huntingdon College National Alumni Board and remained a member of the Alumni Association.
Margaret won the Alabama Music Club's Hymn Playing contest in Montgomery Alabama at age 12 and played the pipe organ for First United Methodist Church in Tallassee as organist for 26 years before moving to Birmingham where she was a faithful and devoted member at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church on Oxmoor Road in Homewood for the remainder of her life. She taught Sunday School from 1950 and played piano for the Hispanic Church at Dawson from its inception in 1989 until she moved to Mount Royal Towers in 2008. Margaret continued to share her musical ability and played for the Sunday church services at Mount Royal from 2008 until early 2013 when her health declined.
Margaret Gibson is survived by her brother, Joseph Gauntt of Tallassee, AL, sister, Josephine Gauntt Tucker of Manchester, GA and nieces Debbie Hudgins, Margaret Brogdon, Mary Hogan; nephews John Cottle, III, Charles Cottle and Burton Gauntt. She is also survived by a number of great and great-great nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood. Her funeral service will follow in the Chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Bill Johnston and Rev. Bayron Mosquera officiating. Burial will 3:00 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tallasse, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Hispanic Ministry or the Educational Trust Fund of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, 1114 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
