Marie DeHart (a.k.a. Shorty and Grandma ‘Bama), beloved by her family and all who knew her, passed away on January 14, 2022. She was born on August 1, 1941, in Orange, New Jersey, to Michael and Mary Rella. She grew up the youngest of 6 children in the Orange area and later lived in Florida, Maryland, and, most recently, Vestavia Hills, Alabama. She was a member of the Catholic Church.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Stephen Rella, Ivan Rella, Domenica Scagliozzi, Alice Bernabe, and Angelina Bowman. She is survived by her daughter, Renee Marie DeHart; her son, Russell Raymond DeHart (Rene); and, the love of her life, her long-awaited grandson, Reed Lakin DeHart. She is also survived by her children’s father, Richard DeHart, a host of nieces and nephews, and her good friend of over 65 years, Marcia Smith.
Marie was the kind of lady who lit up a room with her ever-present smile, even in the midst of adversity. She loved arts and crafts, birds, watching every crime drama known to man, and the color purple. She also enjoyed tending her plants, watching horror and science fiction movies, eating out, playing bingo, and spending time with her family. Her spunk, positive attitude, unconditional love, and smile will truly be missed. Her family is ever grateful for the last several years of time spent with Marie despite multiple illnesses. The family is especially grateful for friends and staff at Morningside of Vestavia Hills and the care of staff at Fresenius Kidney Care in Hoover.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 20th from 4:00-6:00 pm at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, Alabama. Due to COVID concerns, the family requests that those in attendance wear masks. A private family burial at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, New Jersey will follow at a later date.
