Marie (Ree) Warren Myers, lovingly known as Sugar to her children, grandchildren, and many of their friends, was born April 12, 1942 in Montgomery, Alabama. She left for heaven on August 10, 2024 from Birmingham, Alabama.
Ree grew up in West Point, GA with her parents, W. L. Warren (Jimmy) and Erma Cook Warren, and sister, Phyllis. This is where Ree cultivated her charming, southern accent and her warm and contagious giggle. Ree was a cheerleader, and according to one high schooler who signed her yearbook, “about the best-looking thing in school!”
At the University of Alabama where Ree pledged K.D., she caught the eye of Thomas (Tom) H. Myers, who can still describe her outfit in detail. It was love at first sight, at least for him. Once Tom won Ree’s heart, they could be seen cutting a rug at many a party or wedding, and the two of them loved dancing and laughing together, even in the kitchen, for almost 60 years.
Ree had the patience of a saint and proved it as a new wife and a third grade teacher with 45 students (30 boys). She left teaching to raise her three children in Albany, GA. When her children were grown, she enjoyed working with friends at an antique furniture and gift shop for a number of years before she and Tom moved to Birmingham, AL, to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Ree loved beautifully arranged flowers, laughing, French blue, making people feel welcome, her daddy, Westerns, everything about Christmas, bluebirds and robins, playing rock school with her granddaughters, drinking white wine out of pretty glasses, Southern Living, pecan pie, apple pie, blackberry cobbler… actually, any kind of pie, or cobbler or cake, going to the Atlanta market with her friends, dancing the jitterbug with Tommy, making creative Halloween costumes, dipping powdered sugar donuts in coffee, being at the lake house with her family, oldies but goodies music, puzzles, Snickers and Butterfingers, English antiques, naps, setting a beautiful table, painting, sweet potato casserole, giving thoughtful presents, passing on second-hand compliments, porch swings, her children’s friends, homemade ice cream with peaches, letting others have the bigger piece of cake or choose which show to watch, but most of all, she loved being a mother and a grandmother.
Ree disliked scolding children, gnats, gossip, and excluding people.
Ree was a teller of childhood stories, a thoughtful neighbor, and had an undercover sense of humor. She brought the Christmas spirit all year long. She had a way of making each person feel seen and heard. Ree sang off key and it could make your eyes water. She kicked Tommy under the table when he told bad jokes, but giggled anyway. She was spirited and always up for fun. She didn’t seek fans but naturally accumulated them. Ree is often described as a gracious lady. Her granddaughters say she was their first best friend. She is the most selfless, loving person her children know, and she is still Tommy’s sweetheart.
Sugar is our person.
Ree (Sugar) is survived by her loving husband, Tommy (aka Snacky); her three grateful children - Allison, Warren (Joanne), and Pate (Clark); her four adoring granddaughters - Hayden, Ashby, Kenley, and Myers; and her sister Phyllis Dunn. Ree is loved by all, including animals and children, and will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held at 10:30, followed by an 11:30 service in the chapel at Vestavia Hills Methodist Church on Friday, August 16, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Ree’s memory to Kirkwood by the River’s Trail and Garden Fund.
