Marie Smitherman Whitfield, age 94 of Birmingham, passed away on Tuesday, the 5th of January 2021. A native of Bibb County, Alabama, Ms. Whitfield was the daughter of Virgil Smitherman and Mabel Lawrence Smitherman. A member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church for many years, she retired from Infinity Insurance Company.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Gray; grandson, Michael C. Gray (Lesa); two great-grandchildren, Michael A. Gray (Morgan) and Krystal Nicole Gray; and by her great great grandson, Michael David Larimer. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Nell Lightsey.

Friends are cordially invited to the visitation on Monday, the 11th of January from ten o’clock in the morning until eleven o’clock in the morning at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Funeral services for Ms. Whitfield will commence at eleven o’clock in the morning followed by burial at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Centreville, Alabama. Reverend Jonathan Payne will officiate. Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
