Martha (Martee) Barner Lanier Scott passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. She was born on March 17, 1929, to Luther William Barner and Martha Morrow Barner and was a lifelong resident of Birmingham, Alabama. Martee was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 53 years, John Henderson Lanier. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Corbett Scott, and her sister, Lynn Barner Wood (Jim). Martee attended Lakeview Grammar School, Ramsey High School and the University of Alabama where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was a lifelong member of Independent Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities. She was also a member of the Junior League of Birmingham. One of her greatest joys was playing bridge with her friends as well as teaching the game to others. Until the last years of her life, Martee loved tennis and was an avid gardener. Martee is survived by her children: John Henderson Lanier Jr. (Ann), Luther Barner Lanier (Barbara), and Martha Lanier Grizzle (Chip). Also surviving are her grandchildren: Alice Louise Lanier, John Henderson Lanier III, Dorothy Lanier Russell (Andrew), Luther Barner Lanier Jr. (Amanda), Charles Louie Grizzle III, John Lanier Grizzle, and Mary Martha Grizzle. She is also survived by her great grandson, Charles Clifton Russell. The family would like to thank all who helped care for Martee, especially Dr. Joe Welden, Dr. Leon Hamrick, and longtime family friend, Mrs. Daisy James. A memorial service will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at 11:00 am. Visitation will be in the Parlor immediately following the service. The family requests that any memorials may be made to Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, Alabama 35205.
