Graduating from both the University of Montevallo and the University of Tennessee, Joyce began her career with Children’s Aid Society of Alabama in 1956 and later served as Executive Director until retiring in 1997. She also served the Jefferson County Child Development Council for nearly 50 years as a Board Member and former Board Chair.
Her distinguished service included her induction into the University of Alabama Hall of Fame. Joyce will be remembered for her devotion to family, community, and generations of Alabama children and families.
She is survived by her niece, Lauralee Holliday Perryman and by Lauralee's two children, Reagan and Memphis Butler; and by her cousin, Liz McBath. Although Joyce had no children of her own, her family considered her to be more like a mom and grandmother to them.
The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the 9th of September, at Ridout's Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. Friends are cordially invited to the visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the service, via escorted cortege, in Birmingham's historic Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family kindly requests memorial donation be directed to the Children's Aid Society of Alabama or to the Jefferson County Child Development Council in Birmingham.
Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
