November 14, 1940 – July 10, 2026
Mary Anne Gilbert Kohn was born in Denver, Colorado, to Dr. Howard Palmer Gilbert and Mary Wilds Gilbert on November 14, 1940. Her family later moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where she attended Sidney Lanier High School and met her future husband, Francis Hill Kohn.
Mary Anne attended Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia, for two years before transferring to the University of Alabama, where she graduated in 1962. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority.
After graduating, she married her longtime love, Frank, and they shared a long and happy marriage of 63 years. While Frank served in the United States Army, they lived in several places across the country before settling in Birmingham. There, she became the proud mother of three children: Francis Hill Kohn, Jr. (Melanie), William Gilbert Kohn (Gaines), and Anne Kohn Philipp (Tom), all of Birmingham. She took great delight in her three grandchildren: Caroline Kohn, Elizabeth Kohn, and John Philipp.
After her children were grown, Mary Anne pursued her lifelong interest in art. She was active in many art associations, exhibitions, and groups, and she especially loved taking classes, attending workshops, and enjoying friendships with other artists.
Mary Anne was a member of the Mountain Brook Art Association, a juried member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama, and a juried member of the National League of American Pen Women. She was also a sustaining member of the Junior League of Birmingham and a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church.
Mary Anne is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren, along with her brother, David Gilbert (Janie); sisters-in-law, Marjorie Kohn and Mary Walton Percy (Larry); many nieces; and one nephew.
Mary Anne will be interred at Alabama National Cemetery in Shelby County, Alabama, following a private graveside service for her immediate family.
