Mary and the love of her life, Ed, met on a blind date Christmas Eve 1945. Ed was recently home after his discharge from the army and service in World War II. They went dancing at Hollywood Country Club and it was love at first sight. They married on October 25, 1946.
Mary was a lifelong resident of Birmingham. She graduated from Phillips High School. She then attended Howard College (now Samford University) and graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition. She also served a one year internship in Dietetics at Hillman Hospital (now UAB) and obtained the designation of Registered Dietitian.
Mary worked as Head of the Dietary Department at West End Baptist Hospital (now Baptist Medical Center Princeton) for many years, as a dietary consultant for nursing homes in the Birmingham area and as Executive Director of the Alabama office of the National Dairy Council. In 1982 she retired.
Mary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood for 70 years. She was a member of United Methodist Women where she
served in various leadership positions. She was also a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and served as class president for many years.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family. She was a true Southern lady – kind, loving and gracious – selflessly thinking of others instead of herself. She knew Jesus as Lord and Savior and showed the love to Christ to others with her sweet, gentle spirit. Her family rests securely in the knowledge that Mary is healed and now eternally resides with her loving Savior.
