She was born in Huntsville, Alabama on February 11th, 1994. Mary Nell graduated from The Altamont School in 2012 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Montevallo. Mary Nell worked with special needs children at South Shades Crest Elementary School. She loved that work, and she loved the students, and being included as a member of the faculty and staff of that school.
She was a founding member of the Special Session at Camp McDowell, a summer camp session for people with mental and physical challenges, working with and loving the campers and staff there since 1998, when she was four. She was a member of the medical mission team to a small village in Honduras sponsored by St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville. She loved to have fun, and she loved Mexican food and bright colors and sassy eyeglasses. She was very involved in the theater while at Altamont. She loved her dogs and cats, especially Luna, and her fish; she loved north Georgia and Bigfoot; she loved nature and the beach and the ocean and all the creatures in it, especially sharks.
She is survived by her parents, Tina and Kee Sloan, and her brother McKee Sloan, Jr., and many, many friends, all of whom she loved fiercely. We will miss her beautiful smile, the twinkle in her eyes, her quick-witted sense of humor and her infectious laugh.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on January 28th at the Chapel of St. Francis at Camp McDowell, 105 Delong Road, Navoo, Alabama 35578 (between Jasper and Double Springs.) People coming to the celebration are invited to wear your most colorful camp clothes.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express your love for Mary Nell and her family are encouraged to make a contribution to the Mary Nell Sloan Special Session Scholarship Fund, either through the mail or through Camp McDowell’s website at www.campmcdowell.org, which will help campers and counselors come to this community of unconditional love and inclusion for years to come.

keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.”
