Mary Frances, age 92, born and raised in Ensley Highlands, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014. She attended Ensley High School and later Birmingham Southern. As a young wife and mother she joined the workforce as a secretary when her husband was called to serve in the Navy during WWII. In her late 40's, she completed her degree in elementary education at Samford and went on to get her Masters and Advanced Degree. As a long-time resident of Vestavia Hills, she became a dedicated, gifted teacher at Shades Mountain Elementary School, touching the lives and inspiring many individuals. Mary Frances was a very active member of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church and was always generous in her volunteers work helping others. Throughout her life she was devoted to God, her family, the United States of America and her Auburn Tigers.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Fletcher and Florence Cook, and her husband, Robert C. (Bob) Whitfield. Survivors include her brother, Monroe (Virginia) Cook, three children, Beverly (Al) Golden, Robert C. (Pat) Whitfield, Jr. and Patricia (Ken) Howard. Mary Frances also leaves behind her grandchildren, Leigh Clemmons, Laura Nelson, Beth Kreh, Will Whitfield, Chris Howard, eight great-grandchildren, loving relatives and many, many friends. The family would also like to mention and thank Leslie and Robin Nettles for all the love and care given to our mother.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 27th beginning at 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at 12 noon at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Mary Frances may be made to Vestavia Hills United Methdoist Church.
