

Matthew Piers Ferriter, 31, of Mountain Brook, Alabama, formerly of McLean, VA, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 18, 2024. He is survived by his twin brother, William Barton Ferriter; his parents, Olivia Barton Ferriter and John P. Ferriter; his aunt, Barbara Barton Lanier (Barney); uncle, James C. Barton Jr. (Anne); and many cousins and family friends. Matthew grew up in Virginia on the outskirts of Washington, DC, where he especially enjoyed being outdoors, volunteering, cooking fabulous flatbreads and listening to music. A 2012 graduate of McLean High School, he attended Brevard College in North Carolina and worked for five summers at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts as a visitor service assistant. He worked on Student Conservation Association trail crews in Alaska and California and was a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). For five years, he was employed as a contractor at Dulles International Airport. A former member of Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Alexandria, VA, Matthew joined Independent Presbyterian Church after moving to Alabama in 2023.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, October 25, at Independent Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, AL. Donations in Matthew’s memory may be made to NOLS, 284 Lincoln Street, Lander, WY, 82520, or to the food pantry or music programs at Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue South, Birmingham, AL, 35205.
