
Mrs. Barr was born in Selma Alabama on November 19, 1934 to parents Robert Morrison Rountree Jr. and Onezie Hardy Rountree. She attended Selma public schools and was a Cum laude graduate of Judson College where she attained degrees in English and Music and served as student body president. After graduating she taught fourth grade in Eufaula Alabama where she met and married Ambrose C. Hortman. Their daughter Lillian Estelle Hortman was born April 9, 1958. Mr. Hortman died in December of 1958. Mrs. Barr moved to Auburn, Alabama to work on her master’s degree and met Mr. Barr there. They were married in December of 1959.
Mrs. Barr was an active member of Southminster Presbyterian Church where she was elected an Elder, sang in the choir, served on numerous committees, and taught a ladies circle for many years. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother and enjoyed a lifelong love of music. She had a quick wit, a keen sense of humor, and enjoyed cooking--her homemade pies and cakes were a family favorite. She and Mr. Barr enjoyed traveling and visited 47 of the lower 48 states. Daily she exemplified the Virtuous Woman described in Proverbs 31: 10-31.
Mrs. Barr was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters (Onezie Elizabeth Rountree and Estelle Rountree McCarthy), and her only brother, Robert Morrison Rountree III. She is survived by her husband James Richard Barr Sr., daughters Lillian B. Iglehart (Michael) of Trenton Michigan, Elizabeth B. West (Mike) and son James Richard Barr Jr. (Suzanne) of Birmingham, and grandchildren Grace Elizabeth Iglehart, Michael Lee Iglehart Jr., Matthew Hardy Barr, James Parker Barr, and Hunter Lee West. The funeral services and burial will be held on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 9:30 a.m.at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. A celebration of Mattie Moore’s life will be held at a later date.
