Max Lafayette Scroggins

SCROGGINS, MAX LAFAYETTE, departed this life on March 12, 2019 at the age of 91. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 62 years, Chellie Mae Hegler Scroggins, who departed this life before him. He is survived by his son, Mike Scroggins, and daughter, Barbara Scroggins Partridge. He had seven grandchildren: Cindy Scroggins LeZotte, Chad Scroggins, Shepard Partridge, Andrea Partridge Dapkus, Erin Partridge Cain, Lindsey Partridge Petras, and Lauren Partridge Deibert. He was blessed with nineteen great-grandchildren. Max is also survived by his brother, three sisters, and brother-in-law: Derrell Scroggins, Mary Charles Long, Emma Jesse Easterling, Ann Baker, and Willie Hegler. His beloved brother, Doc, proceeded him in death. Max was born on May 3, 1927 in Louisville, Alabama, the oldest of six children born to Charles and Vallie Belle Scroggins. He was a WWII veteran who served in the Army Air Corp in Japan. He attended Troy State University. After marrying his beloved Chellie on December 20, 1947, he worked as an overhead crane operator at US Steel in Fairfield, Alabama. He lived in Hueytown, Alabama and was an active member of North Highlands Baptist Church and later, Pleasant Ridge Baptist. Max delighted in children, animals, and flowers. He loved to garden and to watch things grow. He enjoyed the presence of people; he was funny man, ready to laugh and to make others laugh. He loved fishing at Solomon’s Mill in Pea Creek and his faithful dog, Lady. He was generous, cheerful, and kind. Visitation will be Friday, March 15, from 1:30-2:30 at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, AL. The funeral service will be held at the Advent at 2:30 with Canon Matt Schneider officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Humane Society
