Melanie Ostrom Schultz, age 62, a native of Mobile, AL and a resident of Birmingham for 32 years fought a courageous battle with cancer. She was called home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2014. Melanie was a graduate of Murphy High School and the Mobile Infirmary School of Nursing. In August 1982, Melanie obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from UAB where she was an educator and clinical nurse specialist until retirement on February 1, 2012. Melanie worked diligently to improve the quality of care for her patients. Her work led to new training for many nurses on the UAB Acute Care for Elders Unit. In 2009, she was the driving force for starting what is now the nationally recognized UAB Geriatric Scholar Program, a competitive educational program that provides evidence-based geriatric and quality improvement training. Melanie’s passion for life was immeasurable. She was full of fun and laughter. She’ll forever be remembered for her caring, gentle spirit and compassionate love for the Lord. Melanie was an active member of Oak Mountain Presbyterian church, and dearly loved by family and friends. She will truly be missed until we see her again through God’s grace in Heaven. She is survived by Michael Schultz, her beloved husband of 42 years: two sons, James Schultz (Tara) and Christopher Schultz; three granddaughters, Madeline, Victoria (Tori), and Anna Kate; and her mother, Edith Ostrom. Melanie was preceded in death by her father, Harry Ray Ostrom. Birmingham visitation will be at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M.
